As evening falls on the city’s first snowfall of 2012, here’s a beautiful 1907 print of a winter evening in NYC by John Edwin Jackson. It’s in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection, and we thought it was a nice way to close out our series of snow images today. Enjoy!

Here is an appropriate image from our collections considering the weather in New York today - an 1893 print by E.G.H. Del’Orme, depicting a “winter morning” on Fifth Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan. It’s currently in our Mid-Manhattan Picture Collection. Enjoy! And stay warm!
one of my friends on farcebook posted that 45˚F is the perfect temperature for this time of year. is it weird/terrible that i want to defriend her and/or post some crazy rant in response about how miserable it is that it’s this warm before christmas and hasn’t really snowed yet?

Since it’s supposed to rain cats and dogs in New York this weekend thanks to Hurricane Irene, we thought we’d use this week’s Caturday to share this image of a man and his cat dealing with bad weather. The caricature was engraved sometime between 1818 and 1830, and is located in our Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs. While this is fun, New Yorkers should take the warnings about this hurricane seriously! Be careful, people! First read this NYPL blog post about hurricane preparedness, then check out some NYPL eBooks from the safety of your home (NYPL is closed today and tomorrow, remember). Then get lost in a book until you turn on the news and hear the storm is over!
this is the best summertime weather forecast i have ever seen. the only way it could possibly get better would be if there were some sort of freak snowstorm on monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and friday that canceled work ENTIRELY next week. see also: i miss having vacation time. so much. although it is nice being able to say “I AM NOT COMING ON THUSANDSUCH A DAY BECAUSE I AM GOING TO SEE THISANDSUCH A BAND” and having my dadboss be okay with this. and also telling me to stay home on snowdays. also, pneumoniafests.
