in the third grade, we did a production of alice in wonderland. i was supposed to be the daisy. i had one line, which was comprised of one word (daisy), and i was supposed to sing in the flower chorus for the song the golden afternoon. BUT THEN, DISASTER STRUCK.
all through my school years, i would get strep throat at least once a year. and i got strep throat a day or two before opening night and missed the one or two performances of the play we were doing (i think there was a matinee for the school and parents who were available during the school day, and then a performance in the evening). my understudy had to step in (she was somehow even more timid and shy than i was, which is most certainly a feat, given that i was so ridiculously shy in the third grade). i was devastated, i had never been in a real play before (i was the farmer’s wife in our kindergarten presentation of the song the farmer in the dell. and i actually had a wicked fierce crush on the farmer [dylan something, it was either thomas {not the poet} or roberts], but this girl who didn’t like me told him that i liked him and i had to stop liking him because that’s how your brain works in kindergarten) and i was so looking forward to it. my mom made me the best costumed and a great daisy headpiece. BUT THEN, THINGS GOT EVEN MORE SAD.
my parents had gone grocery shopping (they always went grocery shopping friday afternoon/evenings), and i was at home watching wheel of fortune. and the show was ALICE IN WONDERLAND THEMED. i cried a lot.
i always get a little sad when i hear that song.
